Authorities say a barn is a total loss after fire

POSTVILLE (KWWL) -

Four fire departments battled a barn fire in Postville Saturday evening.

Postville Fire Department was called to Martins Farm on Highway 18 at 4:45 p.m. Castalia, Clermont and Luana fire departments also were on scene as mutual aid.

"Upon our arrival the barn was already starting to be fully engulfed," said Jeff Bohr, Postville Fire Chief.

It took four fire departments and over an hour to put out the fire.

"You could see fire shooting out both sides of the building, kind of looked like the Devil's horns, so it was a very intense fire due to the amount of fuel it had with all the hay inside," said Bohr.

Currently, the building is still smoldering. Fire crews say the uni-loader the owner was using could have started the fire.

"The male owner was doing work and when he come back, he noticed the fire started, it was already spreading so fast that he tried to get some equipment out," said Bohr.

The owner was able to save some equipment before the barn was engulfed.

Bohr says crews did not leave the scene until 6 a.m. on Sunday. He says that morning he talked with the homeowner, "He was devastated, everybody was okay, that was our main concern, he is still in a state of shock like most people would be in a devastating loss."

A devastating and total loss according to the fire chief.

"It's the after effect, it doesn't sink in what it's like to have a devastating fire," said Bohr.

Thankfully no animals or people were hurt during the fire. The homeowner says he is thankful for the extra assistance by neighboring fire departments.

The fire chief says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
