Floods cause Miller Riverview Park in Dubuque to close for the season

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A popular campground in Dubuque is now closed for the season due to flooding.

The park was scheduled to close Oct. 23, but because water covers most of the park, city officials said they will keep it closed for the rest of the season.

"It's about a two week process to clean up the park, to get it ready for camping again. So at this point, with the closing coming up at the end of the month, we felt it was just more practical to be closed for the rest of the season," said Steve Fehsal, Park Division Manager.

The campground also closed over Labor Day weekend because of flooding, but it wasn't as extensive as this time around.

It's an unusual sight, Fehsal said, to see this much water right now.

"It's normally spring, early summer flooding. There has been a couple years where it has come up for a short period of time, where we've had to close the campground, similar to Labor Day, but to have this much water at this time of year for this amount of time, is definitely unusual," he said.

Fehsal said they've already taken out the electric pedestals, which could save them some time and effort if the campgrounds flood in the spring.

Any campers who had booked through the end of the season will receive a full refund, the city said.
