A student at East Tennessee State University caused an uproar Wednesday when he showed up at a peaceful 'Black Lives Matter' protest wearing a gorilla mask and waving a banana.

The masked student, who is a freshman, was taken in by campus public safety.

Tristan Rettke is now charged with Civil Rights Intimidation.

ETSY Officials released a statement saying they were outraged by Rettke's actions at the protest, where students were standing up against violence against African America across the country.

ETSU's President Brian Noland said the incident does not represent the school.

University officials organized a community meeting Wednesday night, and they plan to hold additional such meetings.
