Shell Rock River floods many homes

SHELL ROCK (KWWL) -

The Shell Rock River broke record levels last week, flooding out many homes.

On Saturday, many homes were surrounded by flood water. Today, many home owners are now cleaning up.

One couple was forced to rip up their hardwood floor and throw it away after the water invaded their first floor level and damaged parts of the walls and flooring.

"Well it started coming in the back porch door, then it just started going further up, pretty soon I just opened up the front door and just let it run back and forth," Tom Moffitt, Shell Rock.

The flood waters also took over the family's kitchen and the rest of their first level. On Tuesday, the family started pumping out their flooded basement.

"After 2008, I thought I'd never see anything like it again, because after that we didn't want to move and I told my wife it will never happen again and then it happens and it's worse than before," said Moffitt.

Moffitt says, the aftermath of the flood is the worst part. Many of the family's appliances must be replaced, along with their floor.

Many people in Shell Rock say the hardest part is cleaning up what the flood destroyed.

The family is hopeful the electricity and hot water will be back on by Wednesday, for now the family is staying with relatives.
