Wapsi River floods small town

LITTLETON (KWWL) -

A woman and her two grandchildren are homeless Sunday after the Wapsi River floods their home in Littleton.

Family and community members came together, making over five-thousand sandbags, hoping to fight the flooding in Littleton. Despite their hard work, they say the Wapsi River won.

The river took over many homes in the small town, but community members are trying to stay positive during this hard time, "We call ourselves the Wapsi River rats," said Melissa Cosgriff. When asked about the grandmother and her two grandchildren Cosgriff says, "She had five inches of water in her house, she lost everything, the only thing she had is what they left with, on their backs."

People in the area say the river rose very quickly, giving them little time to save any belongings.

People who live in Littleton are asking others not to come into town to sight see. They say they are going through a devastating time.
