Cedar River expected to crest tonight in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Despite high water, it's beautiful weather outside, and it seems to be drawing people to the Cedar River banks.

Near the 11th Street Bridge, people were walking within inches of the Cedar River despite police and other first responders tell them to stay away.

Earlier Saturday, the Cedar River was hitting the bottom of the 11th Street Bridge, but not flowing over.

As a reminder, if you're out and want to see the river, keep a safe distance, and don't cross barricades, as it is expected to crest later tonight.

"Luckily for me, I don't live that close to it. So, I'm not going to be as affected as bad. I hope anyone who is affected, I just hope they are helped, and safe, and nothing bad happens to them," Elizabeth Padget of Waterloo said.

Right now, barricades downstream seem to be holding up.

I caught up with neighbors in the Cedar Terrace area who say they've stopped sandbagging, because they don't expect flooding to get any worse.

Even though the water is going down in certain areas, first responders remind people it is still dangerous and to be cautious.
