Areas of Palo evacuating due to flood

Posted: Updated:
PALO (KWWL) -

Mandatory evacuations are underway in Palo.

Around 80 families are being forced from their homes as the Cedar River rages on.

The mandatory evacuation was announced late this morning and includes the SE corner of the community.

Many people are working to gather their belongings as well as sandbag.

Matt Stober says he and his wife just moved into their dream home in the area 5 months ago.

"My wife and I bought the house in April, we moved in. We were told by our mortgage company we didn't need flood insurance so obviously to save a few bucks we didn't get any and now this is happening and we are doing everything we can to try and mitigate any kind of loss we might have," says Stober.

He tells us he will continue to put up sandbags until someone makes him leave.

The nearest Red Cross shelter for those in need is at Cedar Hills Community Church in Cedar Rapids, that's about 9 miles from Palo.

The shelter at Cedar Hills Community Church can accommodate those with special needs.
