Governor Branstad visits Shell Rock

Posted: Updated:
SHELL ROCK (KWWL) -

Many homes in Shell Rock are completely submerged by water, due to an overflowing river.

Governor Terry Branstad toured the flooded areas Saturday, assessing the damage.

Governor Branstad made three stops around Shell Rock during his tour. His first stop, was Main Street, where the Shell Rock River caused massive amounts of flooding on its banks. His second stop was a neighborhood with homes that are completely submerged by flood water. His last stop, was in a second neighborhood with flooded basements due to sewer backup.

The Governor says the damage is devastating, but he's pleased with everyone coming together, "I am really proud of the people, they have a positive attitude despite the significant disaster they are facing."

This was the highest the Shell Rock River has been since 2008, but the good news is a neighbor says the water looks like it's receding.
