Cedar Rapids comes together to brace for flood

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The city of Cedar Rapids is not waiting for the flood to hit in order to react, they're bracing days in advance for what is expected to be a major flood.

Mayor Ron Corbett says we have three days to prepare, he  says we were caught off guard in 2008 but not this time.

Volunteers can be seen all over the city sandbagging and doing what they can to protect the community.

"We know how real this can be and so we're gonna do what it takes even if for some reason it doesn't show up. We all know something is going to show up but even if it didn't the threat inspires us to move," says Dan Alpers, a volunteer.

We are told preparing is not just about protecting property but most importantly protecting people.

City officials have said over and over again safety is the number one priority.

They're reminding people to obey road closed signs and to stay out of flooded basements.

We are told water in flooded basements can become electrically charged.

Officials also telling residents to be patient with road closures, as work is being done to prepare for water.
