Colleague remembers UI student accidentally killed over the weekend

Posted: Updated:

A University of Iowa graduate student died after an accidental shooting on Sunday.

24-year-old Megan Sloss was mistakenly shot and killed by her brother.

The incident happened in Sac County.

Investigators say Megan was driving while her brother was demonstrating how to clean his gun, when it fired.

Megan was shot in the hip, she died from her injuries.

We are told Megan worked at KidSight in Coralville while attending the University of Iowa.

"She walked in the door on Friday and we said happy anniversary Megan, we knew it had been a year she had been with us," Lori Short told us, Program Manager at KidSight.

Megan worked at KidSight for exactly a year at the time of her death, it was a stepping stone for what she truly wanted to do with her life.

"Everything that Megan did really somehow was connected to kids and what she hoped to do after finishing her masters degree was to help council children," Short says.

Megan's coffee mugs could still be found at the KidSight office this afternoon.

It's a place she graced each day she worked by simply being a good person.

"Everything good is what Megan was about she was beautiful inside and out, she carried herself with much grace and poise yet she was fun and adventurous just an all around good person good values, good morals," Short told us.

According to Megan's obituary she was studying social services at the time of her death.

Her passing is devastating to those who knew her even for a short time.

"We're certainly all going, getting in the car tomorrow and going over to Guthrie Center to be a part of the services. I don't know yet, it's a process it will definitely be a process to fill the void that Megan's passing will leave with all of us," Short says.

Megan and her brother were on their way to a family event Sunday when the accident happened.

They planned to be doing some target shooting later that day.

The incident continues to be under investigation.
