21% of UI undergrad women report being raped in survey

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

It's a shocking statistic, 21% of undergraduate women surveyed at the University of Iowa report being a victim of rape.

The number is a result of a campus sexual misconduct survey, released today.

University officials say they had a low response rate as far as students participating in the survey and completing it, but they admit the number is not good.

"The fact of the matter is the number is horrible, it's a scourge in our society, what's important is that we work to bring that number down," says Dr. Tom Rocklin, UI Vice President for Student Life.

The University of Iowa introduced a two-year plan to combat the problem.

The plan includes prevention and education, intervention and policy.

University officials say they plan to survey students again in the future.
