Hawkeyes become North Dakota State's latest upset victim

Posted: Updated:

Cam Pedersen's 37 yard field goal attempt stayed just within the upright as North Dakota State upset 13th ranked Iowa 23-21 as time expired. The win marked the sixth straight for the Bison against FBS opponents. It was the first ever loss to an FCS team for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa jumped out to a 14-7 halftime lead behind a pair of CJ Beathard touchdown passes to Riley McCarron and Matt VandeBerg. North Dakota State's lone score came on a 21 yard interception return by Mj Stumpf. The pick was the first turnover of the season for Beathard.

After NDSU tied the game at 14 early in the third, Iowa regained a 21-14 edge late in the quarter on a nine yard connection between Beathard and Vandeberg. The lead held up until the final minutes when the Bison put together an impressive 15 play, 80 yard drive that chewed more than eight minutes off the clock. Chase Morlock's seven yard reception from Easton Stick with 3:41 remaining pulled the Bison within one. Their two point conversion attempt failed.

Iowa, however, would go three and out on their final possession, as North Dakota State drove the ball 46 yards on their final drive to set up the game winning kick.

The Bison won the game up front on both sides of the ball, gaining 239 rushing yards to just 34 for the Hawkeyes.
