Riehl Street neighbors call it a miracle

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors say it's a miracle.

A huge tree fell right between their homes during a storm.

The storm broke a branch off a tree causing enough damage that could have killed someone.

The Putney and Wendel families of Waterloo say they're both happy everyone is all right.

They say it was a matter of timing and a few inches that kept them from harm's way.

Everyone heard it.

The tree came crashing into the Putney's home around 8:45 p.m. Friday, inches away from the kids' bedroom.

"I'm thankful nobody got hurt, really. There's some damage, but it doesn't seem like there's a lot. There's enough. I'm just hoping we get it cleaned up and we get done with it," Ray Putney said.

Neighbor Chris Wendel heart it too and called Ray right away to make sure everyone was all right.

"I was really scared. I screamed, and the dog jumped off the bed. He was really scary, and my heart raced," Wendel said.

Both homeowners say they hope to remove the branch and cut the tree down that's been here more than 100 years.

After that, they can start to make repairs.

"The rest of the tree is going to come down. We're not going to have this issue again. We're not going to risk it," Putney said.

Despite damage, families are looking on the bright side, saying a higher power was watching out of them.

"It's a miracle on Riehl, because the tree went straight down the middle of both  houses. They were with their kids, and they were in their bedrooms, and I was in mine. It's just that we're OK," Wendel said.

Both families say their rooftops were newer after previous repairs from recent storms, and they will have to be fixed again.

Fortunately, the Putney's have insurance to cover the damages.

According to KWWL meteorologists, gusts were blowing more than 60 miles an hour during Thursday night's storm.
