6-year-old who sparked Amber Alert found chained to tree

Posted: Updated:

A six year old who was subject of an Amber Alert has been found alive, chained to a tree.

Friends of the family says Stefanny Lenneth Lopez-Castro has been taken to a hospital. The sheriff of New Hanover County, North Carolina, Ed McMahon told reporters this morning, "we beat the odds".

The sheriff says the girl is doing well and was found about two miles from her home.

McMahon says Douglas Edwards, 46, of Wilmington, is in custody. Edwards is a registered sex offender and has been charged with first degree kidnapping.

The FBI says in cases like this, every second counts. An agent said they were able to bring in necessary resources to run down every lead.

The girl was taken from the driveway of her Carolina Beach Road home around 5:00 p.m. Wednesday. Edwards' address listed on the Sex Offenders Registry is about four miles from where she lives.

Records show Edwards was convicted in 1996 for first degree sex offense and indecent liberties with a minor involving a six year old victim. He served a year and four months in prison and was put on probation for 16 years.
