New plans for the site of The Great Wall restaurant

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

A popular restaurant on a local college campus that was recently lost in a fire will soon be making a comeback.

The Great Wall of China caught fire back in April of this year. Fire crews fought the flames for several hours, but the building on College Hill near UNI was a total loss.

"It was really sad. It was heart breaking. I mean, Great Wall added so much character to Cedar Falls. Just one of those places everyone likes to go. It was upsetting," said UNI Student Dane Schaffer.

The fire taking out not only Great Wall, but Gingers as well. It really knocked out an entire city block of College Hill. But looking on the bright side, it is opening up some opportunities for redevelopment and new businesses here in the area.

With in the year, the empty lot will be transformed into a multi-store front building.

The Great Wall will make its come back in a much needed update.

"It was getting a little tired, so this is a wonderful opportunity to really spruce up not only that building and that business, but add some additional lease space, really help establish that corner and continue what is great about the Hill a little bit farther to the north," said the architect on the project, Dan Levi.

The three remaining spaces have yet to be filled, but the students have many suggestions including Des Moines' famous Zombie Burger.

"Chipotle would be fantastic. I would be content with a Chipotle," said Schaffer.

"Oh a good Mexican restaurant would be nice. . . Maybe more boutiques for girls to go shopping," said UNI student Jadee Walsh.

The project was presented to the Cedar Falls Planning and Zoning Commission, Wednesday and awaits their approval.

The goal is to have the new businesses open for the start of next year's fall semester.
