Senator investigating immigration status of driver in deadly Des Moines crash

DES MOINES (KWWL) -

An Iowa senator wants change after a deadly crash in Des Moines.

Senator Chuck Grassley is investigating after a deadly crash in Des Moines last Thursday

The senator believes the man allegedly responsible for causing the crash may have been living in the country illegally.

Police say Fernando Aguilar ran a stop sign in a neighborhood and crashed into two other cars, killing a 12-year-old girl and injuring others.

Now, Senator Grassley wants to see if Aguilar had an order to be deported and if he had any other run-ins with police.

The senator has been looking into several incidents this year involving illegal immigrants who've killed people.

Grassley raised similar questions after a 21-year-old woman from Council Bluffs died.

She was killed in a drunk driving crash. Police believe the driver was in the country illegally.

Senator Grassley is working with other senators.

They want to require immigration officers to question illegal immigrants who've committed crimes that have killed or seriously injured others.
