Teacher resigns after leaving loaded gun in bathroom

Posted: Updated:

A Pennsylvania teacher has resigned after leaving a loaded pistol in a school bathroom.

Cumberland Valley Christian School president Mike Sanders said the teacher, identified by state police as Beth Dixon, 63, had a permit to carry but took the gun out when she went to the restroom and forgot about it.

The gun was loaded and was found by two students in the aftercare program.

Dixon has been charged with endangering the welfare of child. State police provided the following account of what they say happened:

"On 08/25/16, between the hours of 1330-1630, DIXON, a teacher at Cumberland Christian School, accidentally left a pistol in a restroom in the school. While working at the school, DIXON went to use a restroom. There, she removed the pistol, keeping it holstered, and placed in on the tank of the toilet. She then forgot it there, and throughout the course of this incident, four children ages 6-8, used the single uni-sex restroom where the pistol was left. The last child to see it, informed his parent, who in turn informed another teacher, at which point DIXON remembered leaving the pistol in the restroom and retrieved it. DIXON then called a school administrator to inform him of the incident and to also resign from her position."
