Guttenberg GermanFest September 23-25

Guttenberg will celebrate its 26th annual GermanFest, beginning Friday evening, September 23rd.

The annual celebration runs all weekend, and concludes with a German church service at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, September 25th, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg.

All Guttenberg GermanFest activities will take place on the 500 and 600 blocks of South River Park Drive, unless otherwise noted.

Friday, September 23

The celebration begins Friday afternoon with the Craft Fair and Market opening at 3pm. A pork dinner will be served at 5:30pm in the festival tent. Wine from Guttenberg’s own PromiseLand Winery will be available, along with German and domestic beer. Enjoy live music by the nationally touring polka band, Barefoot Becky and the Ivanhoe Dutchmen from 6-10pm. This crowd-pleasing four-piece group hails from Mount Vernon, Iowa and blends German-style polka music, Czech music, country, big band, and party favorites!

Saturday, September 24

Opening ceremonies kick off at 10am in the festival tent. The day includes a pancake breakfast at Clayton Ridge High School, arts and craft vendor market, contests and games for all ages, live music and dancing, food, biergarten, 5K walk/ run, scavenger hunt, wiener dog races, dog show, home brew tasting, sauerkraut cook-off, special Guttenberg videos at the

library, and more! Vendors and local restaurants will be serving German specialties and other favorites. Scratch Cupcakery’s Curbside truck will make an appearance at 10am.

5K Walk/Run & Walking Quest

The GermanFest 5K Walk/Run is sponsored by the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital. Registration is from 7:45-8:15am at the hospital’s main entrance at 200 Main Street. Walk/run begins at 8:30am. New this year is the hospital’s Walking Quest for GermanFest. Register at the hospital from 8:45-9:15am for a scavenger hunt and learn about the history of Guttenberg.

Featured Entertainment

Musicians will perform throughout the day, including the Guttenberg German Band, the Silbertaler Trio, Lyle Beaver, RockTide, and the Love Handles. Headliner and local favorite, Triple Threat, will play from 7-11pm. Other entertainment includes performances by UNI’s International Dance Theater Dance Company, Fever River Puppeteers, and a children’s magic show featuring the Quad City Magician, TJ Regul.

Fun and Games

Enjoy a kiddie train ride, puppet theater, magic show, games in the park, and sand boxes, along with obstacle courses for kids and adults. Adults can also try their hand at “Hammerschlingen” in the main tent. Enter your pooch or watch the popular wiener dog dash and the dog show. Keep an eye out for wandering fairy tale characters throughout the day on Saturday!
