Muscatine county officials give in to persistent beavers

Posted: Updated:

MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) - After repeated run-ins with dam-building beavers, officials in Muscatine County have decided to let the rodents win.

The Muscatine Journal reports ( ) county supervisors decided that after tearing down a beaver dam three times, they'll let it remain in a ditch unless it backs up water that threatens a roadway.

Officials say it cost up to $3,000 each time workers removed the dam. It took the beavers only two weeks to rebuild the structure.

Supervisor Jeff Sorensen says it's county policy to "leave the dam alone."

The county will send a letter to residents who have complained about the dam, informing them of the policy.
