Just before bar close at 2 a.m., an Iowa City Police Officer saw people running near the intersection of Burlington & Clinton and it appeared there had been an altercation.

Officers learned that at least one of the people had a handgun. Another officer saw a person matching the given description nearby holding a handgun.  They attempted to approach the person, but he took off running and ignored commands to stop.

The suspect, still holding the firearm, ran into the Pedestrian Mall amongst hundreds of people shortly after bar closing and continued to ignore commands to stop.  He continued to run from officers through the crowds of people and was caught by officers near the intersection of College & Linn.  The suspect no longer had the gun on him and did not cooperate in helping officers find the gun.

Knowing that the a firearm had been discarded by the suspect during the pursuit, the Iowa City Police Department ordered all citizens to exit the Pedestrian Mall.  Once clear of people, officers continued searching for the gun, but ultimately did not locate the weapon.

An Iowa City Police Officer sustained minor injuries during this pursuit.

While officers were working with the above information, they were alerted that a person had shown up at the University of Iowa Emergency Trauma Center with a gunshot wound.  The victim is currently being treated at the hospital for the gunshot wound that is believed to be non-life threatening.
