Annual Iowa fire fighter convention

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of fire fighters were in Waverly this weekend for the annual Fire Fighter Convention. Fire fighters used the drills from the convention to train and also compete.

"The drills are things that they use on the fire grounds like I said, replacing a section of hose if one was to break, extending a line if it's not long enough, coupling drills and then water application, which would be the water fight, it's all drills they use so it's good training for them, while they are practicing for it and then we use this for competition is also for fun," said Mark Mcness, president of the Iowa Fire Fighters Association.

Some fire departments have been attending the convention faithfully for years.

"Yeah, I've been doing it for twenty-six years now," said Kevin Bingham, fire fighter.

Fire fighters say the most important part of the annual convention is the team bonding.

"This has been a tradition, just like fire fighting is a very traditional occupation with people, and it's good for camaraderie, it's good for team building and the department to come out and work on the drills and to network with other departments and make a lot of good friends out here and then we get ideas off of each other and good friendships that we use in mutual aid and everything else down the line," said Mcness.

Overall, the fire fighters say they had a good time.

"It's just a great group of guys, not just our department, but everyone's department, everybody's so friendly, you kind of have that common background that everybody can get on board with," said Pete Smith, fire fighter.

The Iowa Association of Fire Fighters will vote Sunday September 11, for the location of 2018 convention.
