Pedestrian killed after being hit by car in Cedar Rapids

A man is dead after being hit by a car in Cedar Rapids on Friday night.

Cedar Rapids police officers and firefighters, along with Area Ambulance Service personnel, were dispatched to an accident in the 1900 block of 1st Avenue East at 7:16 p.m. on Friday evening.

A  71-year old man was found about 20 feet west of Crescent Street on 1st Avenue East.  The man was attempting to cross 1st Avenue when he was struck by a 2002 Kia Sportage that was traveling westbound on 1st Avenue.

An investigation by the police department has determined that the 71-year old was attempting to cross 1st Avenue from the south side of the roadway to the north side when he was struck by the car. He was not in a crosswalk when he was hit by the car.

The man, whose identity will not be released until family members can be notified, was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Britney Marx, 26, of Marion, IA.  She was not injured.

There have not been any charges filed.

The accident remains under investigation.
