Commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11

This weekend is the 15th anniversary of September 11, 2001.  Here is a list of local events to commemorate the historical day.

Time:  September 10 at 7:00 PM and September 11 at 2:00 PM

McElroy Youth Theatre; Walker Building
Waterloo, Iowa
Details:  "The Guys" performance will be held throughout the weekend.  Nick, a New York Fire Department captain, is left with the task of delivering the eulogies for eight fallen firefighters who perished during the evacuation of the World Trade Center.  Unsure of what to say and overwhelmed by emotion, he secures the assistance of Joan a journalist, who helps him craft eulogies to honor not only his men who died, but also everyone who lost their lives that day.  Tickets are available for $10.

Details:UNI faculty, staff, students and community members are invited to join the Northern Iowa Student Government for a Flag Planting Remembrance. Individuals are invited to plant a flag in memory of each person who lost their life on 9/11.  A moment of silence will be held at 8:37 a.m., 8:59 a.m., 9:03 a.m. and 9:28 a.m. to commemorate the collapse of the World Trade Center Towers and the crashes at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

Details:  Dubuque Fire Department will pay tribute to 911 victims with a traditional bell ceremony to recognize the firefighters and other emergency personnel lives lost on 9-11, 2001, when two planes intentionally flew into the World Trade Center.  The event is expected to last approximately 15 minutes.

Details: The "9/11: Rising Above" half hour special will commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11.   Narrated by veteran newsman Tom Brookaw the program honors America's not only surviving, but also rising above the tragic day in history.

Details: Cornell College will hold a service outside of the Allee Chapel at the Peace Pole on the Cornell College campus, which was placed in its current location on the first anniversary of the attacks.

Details:  The Third Annual 9-11 Vinton Feeds the World 2016 will be held to package meals  The 2016 goal is 50,000 meals to be packaged. Half will be distributed to to Benton County and the other half will be sent overseas.

Details:  National Day of Service and Remembrance, neighborhood clean up: Meet in the Park Avenue parking lot of First Presbyterian.Teams will be assigned to spread out into the neighborhood. Gloves and garbage bags will be provided. · Return to the church at 4:30 p.m. to enjoy fellowship at the Sunday Supper served at the church at 5 p.m.

Details: The 9/11 planning committee and United Way is hosting the 9/11 Day of Remembrance and Service. This event will showcase stories and experiences of first responders, The night will be observed with music, inspirational speakers, and fellowship.
