Visitors impressed with Hancher Auditorium

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The University of Iowa's largest flood recovery project is ready to see, and it's just as impressive inside as it is outside.

The Grand Opening Ceremony starts at 3:00 p.m. and an open house and self-guided tours will start at 4:00 p.m. and last til 7:00 p.m.

The new 1,800-seat theater was rebuilt nearly two feet above the existing flood plane to ensure it stays dry in case devastating floods flow through the area again, like back in 2008.

Speakers say it's a proud day for Iowa City, and visitors say they are also impressed.

"Well, this is an architectural wonder it seems like for the middle of Iowa and Iowa City.  It's a beautiful structure, and it's a tribute to the people who designed this, and their decision to move it back off the water a little bit. It's going to bring enjoyment for many many years," visitor Joe Tuttle of the Cedar Rapids area said.

Keep in mind, more than 1 million hours were invested into the reconstruction of this building to make sure it truly sparkles.

As a reminder, self-guided tours will end at 7:00 p.m. Friday, but if you can't make it, you can always come Sunday.

The University of Iowa will hold a second open house September 11 from 2:00 p.m until 5:00 p.m.

The first performance at Hancher includes Steve Martin and Martin Short later this month.
