Retired engineer concerned about pipeline construction safety

(KWWL) -

A retired engineer says he's worried about construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

In Iowa, more than a fifth of the pipeline has already been built.

Joseph Reutter says he's been keeping an eye on the excavation work being done along Highway 30 between Boone and Ames. He's worried about the safety of the workers.

"If you get a cave in, first thing the poor person can't do is breathe," said Reutter, Registered Professional Civil Engineer. "You're going to cut off his blood circulation, so immediately you gotta get him out of there and how long can you hold your breath."

OSHA says it's unaware of these concerns and has not received an official complaint.
