Former Cedar Rapids teacher pleads not guilty to sex exploitation charges

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A former substitute teacher who admitted to having a sexual relationship with a high school student pleads not guilty to sexual exploitation charges.

Mary Beth Haglin, a former sub in the Cedar Rapids Washington High School, told KWWL she was having a relationship with a 17-year-old student.  She entered a written not guilty plea Wednesday.

Haglin says the school told her to keep quiet when they found out.  She then turned herself into the Linn County Sheriff's Office.  A number of people were asked to step down amidst the scandal, including longtime Washington High principal Dr. Ralph Plagman.

If convicted, Haglin faces two years in prison and would have to register as a sex offender.
