(KWWL) -

Governor Branstad met with people at the community center in Fort Atkinson.

This comes after he toured Spillville, Freeport and Fort Atkinson to see what damage they were dealing with from this week's floods.

One place he stopped at was the Inwood Ballroom in Spillville.

Inside the Inwood Ballroom, there was a muddy floor and furniture knocked to it's side.

A refrigerator was lifted up by water and ended up resting on the counters.

The Inwood Ballroom managers say starting today, volunteers will be coming to help cleanup.

Governor Branstad says Spillville is in one of five counties that can get disaster assistance from the state.

He says he wanted to see the flooding and damage for himself.

"You need to be there to reassure people that we're aware of it. That we care, and that we want to be their partners in helping to rebuild," he said.

The governor says he also wanted to come and look at the damage to see whether or not it qualifies for help from the federal government.

Governor Branstad says during these tours, some people told him they were actually hit worse during these floods than they were during the floods of 2008.
