Coast Guard: Underwater hazard damaging boats near McGregor

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (KWWL) -

The  U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Prairie Du Chien is warning recreational boaters on the Mississippi about an underwater hazard that has damaged a number of boats this summer.

They say the hazard is on the Mississippi near the confluence of the main and east channels just south of McGregor.

According to a press release, the exact location is being described as being on the Wisconsin side of the channel near a rock bank and east of the center of the channel near Bergman Island.

The latest boat to fall victim hit the object, tearing the transom from the vessel and disabling it.  They were towed by another boat to the Winneshiek Marina.

The Coast Guard warns all vessels to be careful in this area until the hazard has been properly marked or removed.  In the meantime, they say, be sure to wear your life jacket, and watch for debris, which can be more plentiful during times of high water.
