Waterloo East opens the football season under new head coach

Posted: Updated:

2016 marks another new beginning for the Waterloo East football program.

The Trojans have not won a football game since the 20-12 season....

So now East High has its fourth head coach since the Trojans last win.

Xavier Leonard takes over the reigns of the Waterloo East football program.

Leonard a native of Miami, Florida has spent the last two years at Belmond-Klemme high school where he led that program to a couple of state playoff appearances. Leonard also spent two years as a position coach at Ellsworth Community College.

Leonard who was hired at East High last month is well aware of the challenges facing the Trojan football program.

He says the biggest obstacle is getting kids out.

Xavier Leonard said, "This Particular team right here this particular program roster numbers period. Getting these kids eligible getting going out for football getting them to appreciate--I got here in July a little late that is alright. I hit the ground running the roster numbers are a little better that other years from what I hear so we are moving up. We have a mandatory study table at 2:45 and we go out to practice 4. So those kids will have a clean hour to get their homework done and I work in the school as a person who is charge of monitoring grades and making sure kids go to class so this thing has nothing to do but go up and we will get the roster numbers up in this program."

The Trojans open the football season tomorrow night at Des Moines North.
