Town prepares for potential flood

ELKADER (KWWL) -

The Turkey River is steadily rising in Elkader, forcing the community to come together and prepare for the potential flooding.

The river is spilling into downtown Elkader. It's forcing many local businesses to pack up their belongings.

"You try and help your neighbors and be there for others, so hopefully we will survive this and keep our grocery store, but everybody along the Main Street, they are emptying out their buildings, especially the basements so there's a lot of hustle and bustle in town," said Janet Hackenbroc, Elkader..

During the floods of 2008, the Turkey River destroyed the town's market and many homes.

"I think every time you go through it everybody learns a little bit more, I know I did," said Lynn Dahling, Elkader. "I've never been through it before 2008 and we made a lot of mistakes, I made a lot of mistakes through clean up, but we've had some good advice from the seasoned people who've been through it before."

One business owner says the town needs to prepare for more than just the water.

"Actually out back there's a guardrail for the protection of mostly, so people don't fall off the edge, but to block the waves and to block any trees coming through," said Jeremy Bahls, Elkader.

The town has seen this before and some say they know what to expect.

"It will start surging forward and when it becomes so much it gets up over a certain point it will just flow in," said Bahls.

The city has shut down most of Main Street and lined it with sandbags.

They plan on shutting off the electricity later Thursday evening.
