Rain-swollen Turkey river menaces northeast Iowa communities

Posted: Updated:

ELKADER, Iowa (AP) - Some people have been sandbagging and making escape plans as the rain-swollen Turkey River rises in northeast Iowa.

Authorities said Thursday the minor flooding already occurring in Clayton County's Elkader and elsewhere could worsen. The river's forecast to hit 27 feet in Elkader - 15 feet above flood stage and just three-quarters of a foot under the record crest of more than 27.75 inches in 2008.

City officials were meeting late Thursday morning to discuss the situation.

The heavy rain Tuesday night and Wednesday morning claimed the life of at least one person and forced evacuations and school closures as it washed out roads. The Chickasaw County Sheriff's Office identified the man as 77-year-old Albert Gott, who died after his vehicle was swept away by fast-moving water.
