Historic Inwood Ballroom in Spillville submerged in floodwater

Posted: Updated:

Torrential rain and historic flooding are threatening a piece of Iowa history, as a viewer photo shows the Inwood Ballroom submerged in floodwater.

The ballroom has stood in Spillville since its completion on May 10, 1922. The facility has hosted legendary acts over the 94 years, which include Louis Armstrong and Glen Miller.

Spillville and much of Winneshiek County have been hit hard by the overnight storms. Sandbagging efforts are underway in Spillville, where the Turkey River continues to rise to record levels of over 20 feet.

The Inwood Ballroom's homepage says a centennial celebration is planned at the facility in 2020.

This is a developing story, stay with KWWL on air and and online as the latest details become available.
