CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A 22-year-old man has died after firefighters say he was pulled from a house fire.

It happened in the 600 block of A Avenue NW in Cedar Rapids shortly before 2 this morning.

Naquave Whitlock was taken to a local hospital after he was pulled from the home, but he did not survive.

Whitlock's 20-year-old girlfriend Alize Watson escaped the fire and was treated at the scene.

Firefighters say a pot had been left unattended on the stove, causing the blaze.

"I thank God for the night that we did have because it wasn't an argument it wasn't nothing that would be like damn I wish I would've said something, I wish I could of said goodbye, it was a genuine I love you goodnight," Watson told us.

Watson recounted the moments she had with Naquave before the tragedy.

"We had an excellent time," she said.

Watson says she woke up to the fire, hardly able to breath.

"Heard him in the back screaming so I tried to go back in but my body like it was burning," she told us.

A neighbor brought over a ladder to help Watson get down from the second floor.

"I jumped I didn't care if it was sturdy," she says.

Watson walked away with just a sprained ankle.

"My baby was an army man, he was in the military, going to school to get his CDL so truck driving, just wanted to be a family man we was planning on having a family in the next couple of years," she says about Naquave.

The two had many plans for the future.

"Today is supposed to be the day we get our Vegas tickets we're planning on moving to Texas January first," Watson says.

They're plans that will no longer be the same without Naquave by her side.

"I am happy that God allowed us to end it on a good note, even though it was so soon," she said.

This fire was one of four that Cedar Rapids firefighters have been called to in the last two days.

Watson has created a GoFundMe page to help with funeral cost: https://www.gofundme.com/23gc5bbg .
