Davenport native sang in Rio Olympic closing ceremonies

DAVENPORT (KWWL) -

Julia Michaels was born in Davenport in 1993, but didn’t stay long. She spent most of her childhood in California, and she’s been on the go ever since, all the way to Rio.

The 22-year-old was chosen to perform in the Olympic closing ceremonies with Kygo, a Norwegian DJ whose song “Carry On” features vocals from Michaels.

She’s been writing music since she was a teen. In the early days, she and a co-writer wrote some songs for The HillsThe View, and even the theme song to the Disney channel show Austin & Ally.

Since then, Michaels has co-written with some major stars, including “Fire Starter” for Demi Lovato and “Miss Movin’ On” for Fifth Harmony. She’s also worked with big names like Justin Bieber, Kelly Clarkson, Selena Gomez, Britney Spears, Hailee Steinfeld, Nick Jonas, and Rita Ora. She even co-wrote the album This Is What The Truth Feels Like with Gwen Stefani. Pretty impressive, right?

A watch party was held Sunday in Davenport to honor Michaels.
