DES MOINES - The father of a Grimes toddler who died while in his mother's care is asking Iowa lawmakers to make changes to the state's child custody laws.
The Des Moines Register reports that Dillon Wyckoff told lawmakers Friday that he "did everything in my power to save my son's life," but that the system failed him.
Authorities discovered Wyckoff's 2-year-old son, Mason, dead in his mother's Grimes home on July 22. The mother, Stephenie Erickson, was found unresponsive and later died at a hospital.
An autopsy showed both died from a painkiller overdose, and authorities are investigating the deaths as murder-suicide.
Wyckoff called on lawmakers to pass shared-parenting laws requiring courts to grant equal parenting time to parents unless evidence showed it wouldn't be in the child's best interest.
