Hy-Vee warns customers of scam coupon

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A coupon making it's rounds on social media offering $75 in free groceries at Hy-Vee is a scam, according to a Facebook post from the company Friday afternoon.

The coupon says it's in celebration of the company's 100th anniversary, though the first store was opened up just 86 years ago.

In Dubuque, at the store on Locust Street, only one customer asked in the store about the coupon, but plenty have been asking through social media.

"We had customers that were commenting, asking on our Facebook page, just saying, hey, I've seen this coupon out there, is this a real thing. And obviously, we respond back, saying we have no 75 dollar off coupon out there, there's nothing we're aware of," said Brian Thomas, manager of general merchandise at the store.

And while the lure of that much in free groceries got many excited, Thomas says most have taken the news in stride.

"They're like, that seemed too good to be true," he said.

Most know that Hy-Vee puts out plenty of coupons, but Thomas said he's never seen one for that much in free groceries.

"Not to that extent. We've offered, if you buy x items, you get a free book bag, or a free lunchbox, or something of maybe a smaller amount, but never to that dollar amount."

In a Facebook post Friday, the company says, "We urge our customers not to engage with the website or provide personal information."

They say they are working to get that website taken down.
