Upper Iowa looks to build off third straight winning season

FAYETTE (KWWL) -

Expectations appear to be at an all-time high in Fayette.

"Obviously the main goal is playoffs,” says sophomore defensive back Jordan Rommes, “That's what we're looking forward to this year."

The Upper Iowa Peacocks are coming off a third straight winning season and return an offense that will feature 10 of last years 11 starters. That includes quarterback Dmitri Morales who threw for an average of 280 yards per game before going down with a foot injury late in the season.

“We're just a healthy group of guys this year having our whole offense together being second year guys,” says Morales, “As a unit it's going to be beneficial."

Not long ago the Upper Iowa program struggled to win games, and at times they actually failed to believe that they could. Head coach Tom Shea says that's not a problem with this squad.

“It doesn't matter who we're playing,” says Shea, “They think we can compete against people now. In the past when we got here the first few years it was 'Hey! Let's hope we get a win,' that type of attitude. That's not the presence they have now."

It makes sense considering on top of an experienced offense the Peacocks return their entire defensive secondary, and what Shea calls one of the deepest lines he's ever had.

"We've got depth at that position, so we can play a lot of people,” said Shea, “So we've got fresh people in on defense. To me that's the key."

“We're looking great on the defensive side of the ball,” agreed Rommes, “We're flying around. Coaches always say if you're going to make mistakes, make them at 110 percent rather than 80 percent, and that's what we've been doing."

The Peacocks hope all of it adds up to their first post-season in the Division 2 era.
