IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The University of Iowa is expecting another record breaking first year class, and with around 95% of freshman choosing to live on campus they're finding a need for additional housing.

Construction is well underway for what will be the largest residence hall on campus, known as Madison Street.

Madison Street Residence Hall will be complete by next school year and is expected to house more than 1,000 students.

It will be the second new residence hall built within two years.

"As our population grows we need to make sure we've got enough housing," says Virginia Ibrahim-Olin, Assistant Director for Contracts & Assignments at UI Housing and Dining.

Madison Street will hold about double the students that Petersen Hall currently houses, completed around a year ago.

New students living in Petersen Hall say it's meeting their expectations.

"Super cool living in there it's kind of like living in a big hotel," says Jack McGovern.

Petersen Hall is the first new residence hall on the campus since the 1960's.

"We had a little dip in population and so there just wasn't a need," Ibrahim-Olin tells us.

Population has all but dipped in recent years, the university is expecting the class of 2020 to be their largest yet.

"You know they're gonna probably have to expand again later on even more when more and more, the classes just keep getting bigger and bigger," says Michael Berger, a freshman.

The growing numbers are something the university is working to prepare for.

There are currently 185 students living in expanded housing.

Expanded housing is when students are living on campus, but there is no dorm room available.

Lounges are converted into private rooms for them to stay in until a dorm becomes available.

Expanded housing is something that has been going on for decades at the University of Iowa.

Students in expanded housing are expected to get dorms within the semester.
