An autopsy shows a man whose body was pulled from the Des Moines River drowned.

The body was recovered Monday after a driver on U.S. Highway 65 in Pleasant Hill reported seeing what he thought was a body on the northwest bank of the river.

Polk County medical examiner Gregory Schmunk says the autopsy showed the cause of death was consistent with drowning.

Toxicology test results aren't yet available.

The man has not been identified.

The case has been turned over to Des Moines police because it's likely the man entered the river upstream in Des Moines.

Police say it's too soon to say whether a crime was involved in the man's death.
