Iowa couple facing felony charges after campus theft

Posted: Updated:

Crime of opportunity. A campus security officer at Central College in Pella and his fiancé are charged with stealing more than $10,000 worth of property.

A wedding party sheet cake, Central College fan gear, five bicycles, and a large flat screen television are the items police say the Pella couple stole from campus.

They're now facing felony charges.

"You know it's a shame," said Chief Robert Bokinsky of the Pella Police Department. "It's a matter of you have a young man and a young woman, a 20 year old, an 18 year old, just did something foolish, they didn't understand the gravity of what they done, they were just stealing merchandise."

Staff at Central College tipped off the cops when they noticed that a lot of stuff was missing, including merchandise from the college spirit store.

"Whether they're big fans of Central College or just looked like something that they could get away with, the end result was over $10,000 of theft and elevated it to a class C felony," said Bokinsky. "That's a serious charge, that's a heck of a way to start life."

Conviction for a class C felony carries a sentence of up to 10 years behind bars, and a fine of up to $10,000.
