CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The Cedar Rapids School District announces Dr. Carlos Grant as the interim principal at Washington High School for the upcoming 2016-17 school year, pending board approval.  Dr. Grant joined the district in 2014 as the Metro High School Principal.

He is currently serving as Executive Director of Personalized Learning, Middle Level Education and Partner Development.

The announcement comes after former principal Dr. Ralph Plagman was asked by the district to step down, amidst a sex scandal involving a former substitute teacher and a high school student.  The former teacher, Mary Beth Haglin faces sexual exploitation charges in the case.

“I am extremely excited about joining the Warrior Family,” said Dr. Grant. “Being an educational champion is my primary focus in my life. I deeply believe that we have a responsibility to prepare citizens with the ability to thrive in this world.  It is life or death for many of our students in this country, and I believe that education is the new currency.”

Dr. Grant was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and raised in Columbia, South Carolina.   He received a Bachelor's Degree in Biology Education from SC State University.  He then went on to receive a Master’s of Education (MEd) in Educational Leadership from Winthrop University, and an Educational Doctorate (Ed D) in Educational Leadership and Superintendency from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.  Dr. Grant has more than 17 years of educational experience.

“I appreciate Dr. Grant’s desire and willingness to bring his talents and expertise to this position at Washington High School and to provide stability and leadership,” said Dr. Brad Buck, Superintendent. “He also values and recognizes the importance of his role in preparing the school community for a permanent principal in 2017-18.”
