Train derails into 'DeRailed' bar

Posted: Updated:

A train car derailed and fell onto the bar's storage building last Tuesday in Charles City.

The kicker of the story: The name of the bar is DeRailed, which sits next to a set of railroad tracks.

"Oh yeah it was into the building, so it broke the rafters in the back and the roof and the walls," said Loretta Deetz, bartender at DeRailed.

Deetz says she got a call at seven in the morning about the derailment, two hours before the bar opens.

"They were like, 'we need to know if you're going to open the doors?' and I am like 'why wouldn't I?' That's when I was told that the train had derailed," said Deetz.

But this is not the first time a train's derailed here.

"There was a train derailment, I guess, prior to them opening, so that's why they call it DeRailed, and now there's a second one," said Deetz.

A regular at the bar says he loves the irony behind the name, DeRailed.

"At first I couldn't figure out why, but it didn't take long to figure that out," said Wayne Zwart, Nashua. Zwart was at the bar a few hours after it happened.

"All I saw was a rail car tipped over against the building," said Zwart. "It was a grain car and that's all I seen until they came in with the big machines, picked the grain car back up again, and set it down on the rail again. We weren't allowed to go anywhere near the tracks."

A train derailed, into DeRailed, twice and it could happen again.

"It might, you never know, but I don't think there is anything to worry about," said Deetz.

The bartender also says no one was at the bar at the time of the accident and says thankfully no one was hurt. Deetz thinks the damages will cost more than $10 thousand dollars.
