CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Local athletes are inspired as Team USA breaks records and performs well in a number of swimming and diving competitions.

A University of Northern Iowa swimmer and diver say even though the summer games are taking place in Rio, they feel like they're a part of the competition here at home.

"Once you enter the water, it's just a good feeling if you're tight and in line," UNI Diver Hannah Brummel said.

Both Brummel and UNI swimmer Olivia Knowles say the summer games inspire them.

"When I see them succeed, and I see all their hard work and all they put into that, it makes me want to work harder and achieve like them," Knowles said.

Even though divers and swimmers spend nearly two hours a day, six days a week practicing, they say it never really feels like work.

"It's worth it. At conference, it's really exciting to see all your hard work pay off," Knowles said.

"No, it never feels like work. Lori is great about making practice fun, and we just have an awesome time with the music on while doing our thing," Brummel said.

Both athletes agree the summer games push them to perform better than ever.

"Watching them encourages me to be a better athlete, and I'm really excited for this upcoming season watching them," Brummel said.

Hannah and Olivia said they will start training more when school starts, and they're both looking forward to their first competition of the year in October.
