Counting calories? Staying healthy at the Iowa State Fair

Posted: Updated:

Workers are out getting ready for the 2016  Iowa State Fair to start tomorrow.

Allen Hospital dietitians say it is ok if you would like to indulge on the fun, fair foods for one or two days. They say as long as you return to your normal schedule after, you should not see any changes to your body.

But if you do want to stay healthy, they say you can plan ahead and look at the healthy food choices list on the Iowa State Fair website. Click here for the list.

There is also the Iowa State Fair food finder app. This phone app shows you where all the food is in the fair. It also shows you the nutrition and calories for most of of the fair food.

The Allen Hospital dietitians looked at this year's new fair foods. They said the Hawaiian Pineapple Bowl and the Not Your Mamma's Tacos are healthier options of the new fair food.

They also had some suggestions of you can stay healthy throughout the day. They said to try and share some of the food with friends, be selective about what fair foods you would like to try, and try to bring some fruit or vegetables with you.

The fair opens and lasts through August 21.
