Iowa church walking for boy with rare disorder

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Antioch Baptist Church is getting ready for a 5K this upcoming weekend.

It's for 6-year-old Kiymarius Griffin. He suffers from 22q13 deletion syndrome, a disorder that affects peoples' development.

This little guy just learned to walk when he was 5. His mom says Kiymarius is missing part of chromosome 22. He struggles to develop basic skills, such as walking and talking.

"He has the mind of a two year old at the age of six.  We don't know if he will ever be able to talk," she says. "We've spent so much time in the hospitals, from Waterloo to Iowa City to Des Moines,"

But Antioch Church wants to help. They're organizing a 5K walk/run in honor of Kiymarius.

They hope to teach people in Waterloo about this little guy and his disorder.

This disorder is so rare, right now there are only about 500 known cases in the United States, according to the National Library of Medicine.

The 5K starts this upcoming Saturday at nine in the morning. People can donate to the church even if they don't want to walk.
