Experience breeds confidence for Iowa's Hesse

Posted: Updated:

There are no more surprises for Iowa's Parker Hesse. Last season as a redshirt freshman, Hesse opened the year as Drew Ott's back-up, but soon found himself in the starting line-up following Ott's season ending injury.

Hesse made the most of the opportunity picking up 44 tackles, including two sacks. His pick six against Nebraska in late November helped him garner Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.

Now, as a leader of the Hawkeye defense, he said his experiences helped him in one area in particular.

"Confidence," said the sophomore defensive end, "Once you've been through there, no matter how tough it was, you kind of prove to yourself that you can do it and you belong."

Now, Hesse says it's time for the Hawkeye defense to take the next step.

"We're just trying to improve on it every day. That's just the mentality we have around here, and that's the way we approach things."

Iowa opens the season September 23 against Miami of Ohio.
