Omar Mateen, the gunman who opened fire on a gay nightclub in Orlando and took hostages in a June attack that killed 49 people, was shot eight times by police and was not drunk at the time of the rampage, according to an autopsy report released Friday.

Mateen, 29, was killed in a shootout with police. He was shot in the head, twice in the right chest, once in the abdomen, the right calf, and three times in the right foot, the autopsy report released by the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office said.

The autopsy found no trace of alcohol in Mateen's system. Mateen's ex-wife has said he had a history of with steroids and was abusive. The autopsy report said Mateen's testosterone levels were normal.

The autopsy results suggest that Mateen was shot while facing police. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.

The June 12 attack at the Pulse nightclub was the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history.

Mateen opened fire at the club at around 2 a.m. and took hostages. Police killed Mateen during a shootout after police stormed the building at around 5 a.m. Police have said 14 officers fired shots at Mateen.

Mateen called 911 and pledged allegiance to the leader of the terror group ISIS during the rampage, officials have said.
