What you need to know about the tax-free holiday this weekend

Posted: Updated:

The first weekend of August brings an annual holiday to Iowa.

It's the state's sales tax holiday.

Walmart says they're already beefing up staff and making sure they're fully stocked this weekend.

The sales tax holiday started at midnight and runs today and all of tomorrow.

Walmart says they've noticed many families come out and do a lot of their back to school shopping this weekend because of the holiday.

You don't have to be a back- to school shopper to participate though.

In fact, you still have to pay sales tax on school supplies.

You don't have to pay  it on most clothing and shoes under 100 dollars.

"Usually all the basics get hit. T-shirts, socks, underwear, shoes, and tennis shoes for kids going back to school. That's usually the big things," Cedar Falls Walmart store manager Bob Brokaw says.

Some other big items you don't have to pay sales tax on are coats, sweaters and sweatshirts, hats, and pajamas.

This holiday also applies to online shoppers as long as you shop within the deadlines.

Remember, this holiday does not continue on Sunday.

The average family will likely spend more on school and college supplies this year. That's according to the national retail federation's annual survey.
