Search continues for woman now presumed drowned in Grant County

GRANT COUNTY, Wis. (KWWL) -

The search continued Thursday for a woman who went missing early Wednesday and is now presumed drowned.

Grant County Sheriff Nate Dreckman says a 29-year-old woman was camping at Wyalusing Beach in northern Grant County when she went missing.

"Her and a friend were on the end of the dock, and he dove in to go swimming, and once he got out there a ways, he figured out the current was pretty strong. So he started to come back to shore, and once he got back to shore, turned around to look for her, and she was gone at that point," said Dreckman.

At least 25 law enforcement agencies and more than 100 volunteers have showed up to help look for the missing woman, who has yet to be identified.

"There's several people running active sonar, checking the bottom to see if they can't find her that way. The other part is, they're dragging, using drag bars to try to locate her. The last part would be checking the islands and so forth," Dreckman said.

The search has now spanned two days, and the area that they search continues to widen.

"We keep expanding it because we don't know how far she swam, how far down river she was. We really don't have any idea where she was last seen in the water, so we have to keep expanding our search so we can cover our bases," he said.

Dreckman says the search will continue Friday morning.  As for how long they will search, Dreckman said they will have to call it at some point.  But he adds they'll continue to search as long as people are willing to show up and search.

The name of the woman is not being released pending the notification of her family.  Some of the family was present Thursday for the search, but some has yet to be notified.
