Dubuque to hold house auctions for Southwest Arterial Road project

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

This sprawling three bedroom, brick ranch is for sale by the city of Dubuque.

Its not the only one.

Five other homes, plus some farm structures are being put up for auction as well.

It's to prepare for the Southwest Arterial Road Project. That means a four lane road will be built, connecting highway 20 to highway 61. The project is supposed to make traffic in Dubuque much better.

"Right now with the city's growth is really to the southwest. So we do not currently have a convenient and efficient bypass around the city," said city of Dubuque assistant engineer, Bob Schiesl.

It will stretch nearly six miles reducing high traffic in residential areas. but before that happens, the city needs the homes gone by the end of the year.

City officials are hoping they won't have to be torn down, but instead moved by the buyers. "The homes are in very good condition. They were homes that were constructed in the early 90s...94...95. So there's still a lot of value in very beautiful homes," said Schiesl.

The public auctions will be held Saturday, Aug. 13th at each property. They'll be sold as-is condition.

As for the new freeway, it  won't be completed until the end of 2019. The cost of the project is more than $130,000,000 dollars and it's paid by federal money, with help from the city and county.
